In this version of the training guide, we have given special prominence to programs that offer certificates to the attendees (they are marked with a bullet and indentation). For a discussion of the pros and cons of certificates, read the Article.

  • Bacharach Incorporated. Carbon Monoxide and Combustion Safety workshop ranges from 1 hour to 8 hours but average 3.5 to 4 hours. Covers material relevant to HVAC technicians and installers as well as home inspectors, public health officials, energy auditors, and other weatherization personnel. Other programs include Combustion Analysis and Performance, Venting and Combustion Safety, Building Pressure Diagnostics; and Combustion System Influence on Indoor Air Quality. A test is offered, but it is not required to receive an attendance certificate at classroom seminars. In additional, field training is provided to a limited number of attendees.   • Building Performance Contractors Association. A contractor trade association promoting the development of consumer demand for environmentally responsible buildings. BPCA also partners with utilities and manufacturers to coordinate consumer education, contractor training, and other customer service and market development activities. BPCA coordinates a wide range of training events that cover fundamentals of building science, building performance testing, indoor air quality, air sealing in commercial buildings, energy-efficient mortgages, energy ratings, and other topics. There are a variety of BPCA membership categories, including contractor certification. Certification requires demonstrated knowledge and experience with building science and performance testing, and is based on a written submission of qualifications.   • Building Performance Institute Incorporated (BPI). BPI delivers six separate certification programs that accurately determine worker abilities: Energy Services Crew Specialist; Energy Services Crew Supervisor; Building Analyst I; Large Boiler Plant Specialist; Heating Technician I; and Carbon Monoxide Analyst. To become certified by BPI, individuals must demonstrate acceptable performance in a field setting. Some BPI certification programs include written examinations, lab, and field exercises. BPI certifications are available directly from BPI or through training organizations affiliated with BPI.   • Building Science Corporation. Training in building science, indoor air quality, durability, moisture, new and existing forced air systems (diagnosis and repair), energy-efficient framing, materials selection, pressure balancing, and blower door&endash;guided air and duct sealing.   • Center for Ecological Technology. Training in building science theory and practice, residential energy auditing and technical assessments, blower door guided diagnostics and air sealing, pressure differential and combustion safety testing.   • Energy Crafted Home. Utility program for new construction. Trains builders in Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New Hampshire.   • GRASP. Develops/reviews energy-efficient building plans for rehab and new construction. Provides field support to developers and contractors. Ongoing training classes and basic and advanced building diagnostics including blower door applications and pressure diagnostics, duct leakage testing and sealing, and attic dense-pack insulation.   • Infraspection Institute. Provides certification training for industrial P/PM infrared thermography applications, methods, techniques, theories and practice. Level I and Level II 4.5-day courses pertain to qualitative applications and quantitative temperature measurement, respectively. An entire day of the Level I training is dedicated solely to structural thermographic applications, while Level II includes accurate temperature measurement of thermographic exceptions detected with an imager during an inspection.   • H.L. Turner Group Incorporated. Indoor air quality/HVAC diagnostics and mitigation training. Basic and advanced courses. Training runs about four days and costs up to $1,000.   • Lighting Research Center. Provides continuing education programs on lighting design, technology, and applications that are energy efficient, responsive to human needs, and environmentally responsible. Customized training programs for groups can be arranged on- or off-site. Programs range from one day to two weeks. Continuing education units are granted for all training programs and are accepted by all professional associations, certification and licensing boards, and government agencies, as well as by the LRC's Continuing Education Certificate in Lighting.   • R.J. Karg Associates/Energy Information Management. Contract training for weatherization, natural gas utility, and HVAC personnel. Weatherization training sessions include: Energy Auditor Training, Advanced Energy Auditor Training, Building Diagnostics, Client Education, Carbon Monoxide Testing, and Duct Sizing and Retrofit. Natural gas utility training sessions include: Pipe Sizing, Natural Gas Conversion, From Oil to Natural Gas, Carbon Monoxide and Venting, Commercial Gas Technical and Sales Training, and Gas Deregulation and Contracting. HVAC training sessions include Residential Load Calculation, Commercial Load Calculation, Residential Duct Design, Hydronic Distribution Design, and Carbon Monoxide and Venting.   • Snell Infrared. $1,395 includes a comprehensive manual, dinner on Monday night, lunches on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and full post-course support. Multi-level courses are offered throughout the year at convenient sites around the United States. They start Monday evening and finish Friday at noon. If attendees have an infrared camera, they are strongly suggested to bring it. If attendees don't have equipment, there will be some provided at the class to use during hands-on portions of the course. If an attendee successfully passes an exam at the end of the course, they receive Basic Certification (a Certificate of Completion). If an attendee desires Professional Certification, the course is the first step in reaching that certification; if they also complete their Directed Study, they get a certificate that states that they fully comply with ASNT TC-1A Educational Guidelines.   • Vermont Energy Investment Corporation (VEIC). Customized training on a wide variety of energy topics, including building science, diagnostics, residential construction, retrofit techniques, energy ratings, utility programs, and more. VEIC has provided training for utility DSM program management staff and implementatin contractors, the Weatherization Assistance Program at both the state and local levels, housing program managers and maintenance staff, builders and developers, and women who are learning the construction trade.
