What Were They Thinking?
November 06, 2006
As a HERS rater, I continually think about energy conservation. So when it came time to do the annual defrost of my beer fridge I thought to test the gasket to see if it was properly sealed. I bought this refrigerator at a church yard sale for $5, and it works for about $2.50 a month. Anyway, I used the dollar bill gasket test. (A dollar bill should be held tight if placed between the gasket and the frame when the door is closed.) What I found was that the gasket was disintegrated, so I went to replace it. (I had to dismantle the door.) What I found inside the door (expecting some sort of fiberglass insulation) was single-faced corrugated board! Thought Home Energy readers would like to see what insulation looked like back in the 1940s.
