PV Roof Tiles Heat Up in New York

Sunslates like these are making power for a net-metered system in New York.
The first residential grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) system in New York State has been installed on Long Island. In mid-April, 280 PV roofing tiles were installed on an 82-year-old, two-story, 3,600 ft2 home and office in Greenport. The 3.5 kW array of tiles, which also make up the weatherskin of this building, can produce as much as 30 kWh per day. The installed cost was about $7 per watt.

With this installation, my wife and I have become the first customer generators under New York State's net metering bill (see Marketing Profitable Home Power, HE Jan/Feb '98, p. 31), signed last year by Governor Pataki. This bill requires the state's seven investor-owned utilities to purchase energy at the same rate at which they sell it, and allows homeowners a state tax credit amounting to 25% of the cost of the system over five years.

The tiles are marketed under the brand name Sunslates, and are manufactured by Atlantis Energy Incorporated, a leading producer of building-integrated PV. According to Steve Coonen of Atlantis, this is only the company's second project on the East Coast. However, they are supplying California's Sacramento Municipal Utility District with Sunslates for 300 houses per year.
